[su_tabs][su_tab title=”About”]Born in London, Croydon actually, to parents from Kerry back when people still thought that landing on the Moon was a worthwhile enterprise. As a Croydonian and MayDay baby I’m a lifelong Palace supporter. OK, there was a year when I followed Arsenal and another year QPR, but Palace since 78/79, so that’s pretty close to lifelong. Parents moved back home in ’74 and I grew up in Kerry, came to NIHE Limerick to do Electronic Eng. and graduated Comp Eng. from UL. I blinked and went from being Nearly In Higher Education to Undergoing a Lobotomy. There was a Bush in the White House then too. I spent some time here after that as TA in UL. and then went to Japan – Isesaki-shi Gunma-ken http://www.kogax.co.jp/ What a happy ship we sailed in! The work was mainly industrial automation, Logic Controllers and the like, with some drilling and heavy lifting thrown in for free. I was there about a year and a half. Then back to the land of love and flowers. Since then I’ve worked most of the time with IBM and various IBM/Lotus technologies. I also spent some time at Microsoft, from Big Blue to the evil empire. Actually, I found both to be good work environments. Primarily, I’ve been the technical lead/technical project manager on various projects. Some have even successful in the marketplace. One that wasn’t but which brought me to Boston for 18 months was eSuite, a Java based desktop toolkit some information on that here- I’ve also worked with IBM/Lotus Notes/Domino, some Domino based apps Domino.Doc, and Domino Workflow, and Sametime. I’ve fiddled with a few things like IBM WebSphere and WebContentManagement too. Interests, well, Collaborative Tools is one heading. Anything that involves people trying to do things together interests me. While we can achieve more together than we can apart, we also need to retain ownership, responsibility and the scope for individual endeavour in our work. I’m also interested in how we can create technology that assists in organising large numbers of people to reach decisions that they own. I’m interested in seeing things as needs led, not tech led. I’m also intrigued by mass scale collaborative efforts, especially the field of government. Anyone for full Greek style continuous democracy? Other than that, my interests include soccer (Palace), film, politics (but that’s a secret), history and alternative history, music (I worked on a radio station after leaving school, so I was that sort of DJ as opposed to the Ibiza kind), and some computer games.
