Aparecido Fabiano Pinatti de Carvalho, Fabiano Pinatti for short, has just completed his PhD at the Interaction Design Centre, University of Limerick, Ireland. He already holds a BSc (2004) and an MSc (2007) in Computer Science from the Federal University of São Carlos, Brazil. His areas of interest include Human Computer Interaction, CSCW, Mobile Computing, Context-aware Computing and Computers and Education.
In his MSc dissertation, he has explored how common sense knowledge, collected and made available through computer applications, can be used by teachers for achieving pedagogical issues in planning learning activities. He has been collaborating with the Brazilian Open Mind Common Sense Project, developed by the Advanced Interaction Lab from the Computing Department of the Federal University of São Carlos, since 2005, investigating how common sense knowledge can be used to develop culture-sensitive applications and how this reflects on the usability of the application.
Working under an ISKS/PRTLI scholarship, his PhD was part of the Project Nomadic Work/life in the Knowledge Economy that is concerned with investigating the relationships between a technologically-mediated knowledge economy, mobile/nomadic work and non-work life practices. His PhD research focused on exploring issues related to the technological mediation of nomadic practices such as e.g. (1) how place, activities and the social world constitute the experience of nomadic users; (2) in what way technologies are shaping people’s work/life on the move; and (3) what the aspects of mobile interaction that design could meaningfully support are.
