| |  | | Jim Ballas Bio & Details Jim Ballas is Head of the Interface Design and Evaluation Section, Code 5513, at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C.. He received his Ph.D. in 1980 from Catholic University of America in Applied-Experimental Psychology with a dissertation entitled Sensory and Cognitive Factors in the Classification of Sounds. Prior to coming to NRL, he was on the faculties of Georgetown University and George Mason University. He is a past president of the International Community for Auditory Display, and member of the Acoustical Society of America, Human Factors and Ergonomics Society and Sigma Xi. He served on a U.S. Department of the Interior and U. S. Department of Agriculture Interagency technical review committee which oversaw research on the effects of aircraft noise (on user experience) in national parks and wilderness areas. He has served on audio-related dissertation committees for the University of Paris and the University du Maine in France and for George Washington University. He has published 5 book chapters and 10 journal articles on topics related to audio research. He has one patent pending on an audio rendering device.
